It’s becoming increasingly more common for folks to live without medical insurance. In a lot of cases this is simply unavoidable. For many folks, insurance isn’t made available through their employer and buying coverage outside of work is either cost prohibitive or just not available.

This is a risky proposition, because medical expenses are expensive. And they crop up at unpredictable times. They usually can’t be budgeted for and when they pop up, they have to be dealt with.

For the uninsured, the typical way to pay for medical expenses is credit card debt. While this provides a tidy short term fix to the problem, it doesn’t solve much in the long run as interest fees quickly pile up on these large charges. It’s only made worse when one considers that the medical expenses may limit your ability to go out and make money.

It’s tough to be hard on the consumer in this instance. Racking up credit card debt for medical emergencies may be unavoidable. The answer is a better insurance system.
