There’s an interesting back and forth in a recent Dear Abby column. The original premise is this: a husband is working two jobs in order to support the lavish, material lifestyle that his wife wishes to live.

There’s a lot of debate back and forth (which you can read here). What I think is most important — and not pointed out enough in the article — is that it doesn’t matter very much who is right and who is wrong in this situation. These two people are married. What they choose to do with their life and how they decide to live it is up to them. What is important though is that they are on the same page and that they decide together what their priorities are going to be.

Yes, money is a major factor in the issue this couple is having. But money isn’t the root of the issue. In reality, the root of their issue — which extends beyond money — is communication. In order to improve their relationship and to solve their money issues, this couple needs to communicate and get on the same page.

That’s an important lesson for a lot of us. Money may seem like it’s the problem. But the probably is often how we communicate with each other.
