I didn’t know this organization existed, but there is a Debtors Anonymous. Like you would expect, it’s a support group for people who are in debt. This article contains some real-life stories relating to a Pittsburgh based branch of Debtors Anonymous.

There are a handful of tips in the story too, and this one jumped out at me:

She said the first step to escaping debt is writing down everything you buy for one month from coffee to candy bars.

That’s solid advice. It seems silly and tedious. But at the end of the month (or even a week if you can only manage to do it that long) the charges will really add up for you. My guess is that you’ll see a pattern of spending that you don’t like (i.e. something you’re spending money on that you don’t even realize). By writing it down, you will see it and it will be easy to fix.
